Craniosacral Therapy

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that supports the body’s natural ability to release tension and restore balance.

Craniosacral therapy works directly with the craniosacral system—the connective tissue, membranes, and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Through palpation and deep listening, the practitioner invites your body to unwind tension patterns and find more ease.

Different Styles of Practice

With roots in Cherokee and Shawnee indigenous medicine, the methods that led to Craniosacral therapy were cultivated in Osteopathic medicine. In the 1970s, Osteopathic physician John Upledger coined the term Craniosacral Therapy and began teaching it to hands-on providers such as physical therapists and massage therapists.

Over time, different schools of Craniosacral Therapy have developed. Some practitioners work with a biomechanical approach, focusing on the physical structures of the body. Others lean toward a biodynamic style, emphasizing the body’s inherent rhythms and the deeper forces that underlie health. Many therapists integrate both, adjusting their touch and focus to meet each client’s unique needs.

Our skilled Craniosacral therapists each bring their unique training and intuitive style to a session.

How It Helps

Craniosacral Therapy can have wide-reaching effects because the craniosacral system influences the central nervous system and, through it, the entire body. Clients often seek CST for support with:

    • Stress, tension, and anxiety
    • Headaches or migraines
    • Neck and back pain
    • TMJ dysfunction
    • Shoulder pain
    • PMS and cramps
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Fatigue
    • Sleep disturbances
    • Nervous system regulation
    • Recovery from injury or trauma

What to Expect

Clients remain fully clothed and typically lie face-up on a treatment table while the practitioner uses gentle contact along the feet, legs, hips, spine, and head. Many people experience a sense of spaciousness, release, and integration, with benefits continuing to unfold after the session. It may take several sessions to see the full benefits of the work.
